The “I love the Smiths” elevator scene, beat by beat
The scene takes place in the office elevator in (500) Days of Summer. Tom is listening to The Smiths’ “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” on headphones, Summer hears it, says “I love the Smiths,” then repeats it when he does not catch it. It lasts well under a minute and has five clear beats, which is why it is so easy to recreate.
The five beats
- Two near-strangers ride the elevator side by side. One is wearing headphones.
- The music is loud enough that the other person can hear it.
- She says “I love the Smiths.” He pulls his headphones aside: “Sorry?”
- “I said I love the Smiths.” A short exchange about good taste in music follows.
- The doors open and she leaves, and he is left standing there, delighted.
Which song is playing?
The song in Tom’s headphones is “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” by The Smiths, from their 1986 album The Queen Is Dead. Summer briefly sings a line of it back to him, which is the moment that shows she really knows the band.

Recreate it with your own photos
To make your own version, choose who plays the listener with the headphones and who plays the fan who says the line, then upload a clear photo of each. See the step-by-step guide for details and the photo guide for what works best.
